Details:

The National Literature Centre (Centre National de Littérature - CNL) in Mersch is hosting a tandem reading with Scottish novelist Martin MacInnes and local writer John-Paul Gomez on Tuesday 1 April 2025 at 19:30.

Martin MacInnes, whose novel In Ascension was long-listed for the Booker Prize in 2023, will be in Luxembourg this Tuesday to do a tandem reading with local fiction and satire writer John-Paul Gomez. The authors will read and discuss some of their published work as well as new material.

In Ascension, praised by critics and readers alike, was named Blackwell’s Book of the Year when it was published. Its sprawling narrative follows Leigh, a scientist who develops an algae that can sustain astronauts on long space voyages, made possible by a newly discovered energy source. MacInnes creates a deeply rendered world of the near future and his work poses thought-provoking questions about our origins and where we are going.

John-Paul Gomez, the creator of the "Luxembourg Wurst", won the National Literary Competition in 2022 for his collection The Idiot of St. Benedict and Other Stories, which was published by Black Fountain Press the following year. In the stories, he depicts a quirky, sometimes dystopian view of the future in which humans find themselves increasingly at the whim of forces beyond their control or even comprehension.

The CNL is located at 2 Rue Emmanuel Servais in Mersch. The "Out of the Deep" tandem reading and discussion, moderated by CNL Director Nathalie Jacoby, is free and open to the public.
