On Friday 28 February 2025, a public demonstration will take place in Luxembourg City in solidarity with the large-scale protests in Greece, marking the second anniversary of the deadly train accident in Tempi.
The protest is organised by a coalition of concerned Greek citizens living in Luxembourg who are committed to raising awareness about critical issues in global transportation safety and ensuring justice for the victims of the Tempi crash.
The demonstration is set to take place in Place d'Armes in Luxembourg-Ville at 18:00. The organisers have described the demonstration as an effort "to raise awareness and demand justice for the 57 victims of the tragic train crash in Tempi, Greece".
"Almost two years have passed since a passenger train and a freight train collided in Tempi and the case is still under investigation. It has still not been clarified what exactly the freight train was carrying. Forensic reports show that five to eight of the 57 victims did not die from the collision but from a fire, probably caused by flammable material being illegally transported," said the organisers in their statement.
"The demonstration will also amplify the demand for justice for the families affected by the tragedy, urging both Greek authorities and international bodies to hold those responsible accountable. Protesters are determined to shed light on these efforts to conceal the truth and demand full accountability for those responsible for both the tragedy and the subsequent cover-up," they continued.
In terms of demands, the organisers stated that Greek citizens are calling on Parliament to initiate "procedures for the revision of the Constitution and the activation of the Law on Ministerial Responsibility, as well as the abolition of parliamentary immunity when criminal liability of politicians arises".
The organisers added that the protest is "open to all individuals and organisations who are seeking justice and accountability for the victims of the Tempi incident". They have encouraged "peaceful participation and ask that all attendees bring messages of solidarity, while adhering to all safety regulations".
