In its latest report, Luxembourg's statistical institute, STATEC, has confirmed that the moderate increase in salaried employement continued into the first quarter of 2021.
After an increase of 0.6% in the fourth quarter of 2020 (compared to the previous quarter), the number of salaried employees in Luxembourg grew by 0.5% in the first quarter of 2021. Over one year, this represents an increase of 2.0%; at the start of the health crisis (first quarter) in 2020, this increase was limited to 0.2%.
Administration and other public services showed the strongest quarterly growth, up 1.5% compared to the fourth quarter of 2020. Over one year, these sectors recorded an increase of 5.4%. Specialised activities and support services (up 4.3% over one year) were also among the most dynamic branches during the first quarter of 2021.
On the other hand, industry (down 0.2% over one quarter) and commerce, transport, accommodation and catering (down 0.4%) activities saw a decrease in the number of employees compared to the previous quarter. Industry has thus recorded declines in the number of employees during the last four quarters.
The number of cross-border workers (up 0.6% compared to the previous quarter) increased slightly more than that of residents (up 0.5%). After stagnating in the fourth quarter of 2020, the number of Luxembourg resident employees increased by 0.7% in the first quarter of 2021.
