Luxembourg Members of Parliament (MPs) adopted yesterday a bill increasing working hours for key sectors to a maximum of twelve hours per day and 60 hours per week.

MPs in favour of the bill argued that there were "alarming signs" that an increasing number of people working in these sectors were contracting the virus or being placed in quarantine, thus reducing the availability of essential services.

These changes apply to the healthcare sector and children's shelters in the context of the COVID-19 crisis. This is a preventive and exceptional measure which will expire on 31 December 2020.

The law passed with 37 out of 60 votes (DP, LSAP, Greens, ADR, Pirates). CSV and the Left parties abstained.
