The number of available resident jobseekers registered with the ADEM employment agency in Luxembourg has decreased by 6.2% over one month, but increased by 20.5% over one year.

As of 31 August 2020, the number of available resident jobseekers registered with the ADEM was 18,525. Compared with July 2020, this represents an increase of 1,232 individuals, or 6.2%. Over one year, this figure continued to rise (up 20.5%).

Between April and July 2020, the rise in unemployment was mainly explained by a decline in people going into employment rather than an increase in registrations at ADEM. During these four months, registrations fell by 18% compared to the same period last year. In August, this trend reversed; ADEM opened 2,332 resident jobseekers' applications - an increase of 163 people or 7.5% compared to August 2019. This increase is explained by a rise in layoffs and contract terminations, as well as an increase in the enrolment of young people under 25, looking for a first job.

The number of residentjob seekers receiving full unemployment benefits increased by 2,209 or 29.6% year on year but fell back below the 10,000 mark. The number of beneficiaries of unemployment measures stood at 3,883, and was slightly below the level observed in August 2019 (a decrease of 41 people or -1.0%).

During the month of August 2020, employers declared 2,259 vacancies to ADEM, which corresponds to a decrease of 12.6% compared to August 2019.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate, as calculated by STATEC, stands at 6.4%.
