On Wednesday 12 January 2022, British Airways announced that it is launching four new routes out of London-City airport, including one to/from Luxembourg.
The Luxembourg flight will be operated "up to seven times a week" from 27 March 2022 (the date when summer schedules come into operation). Flight time is 70-90 minutes. The airline has not yet confirmed which aircraft type will be used to service the route; however, it is thought to be a turbo-prop due to the restrictions of taking off from, and landing at, the London-City runway.
Flight times from London-City to Luxembourg will be as follows (local times): 07:55-10:05 (Mon-Fri); 16:05-18:15 (Mon-Fri, Sun); 19:45-21:55 (Mon-Fri, Sun); flights from Luxembourg to London-City will be as follows (local times): 07:05-07:20 (Mon-Sat); 10:55-11:10 (Mon-Fri); 18:55-19:10 (Mon-Fri, Sun); 17:05-17:35 (Sat)
British Airways also services Luxembourg from London-Heathrow with flights (from the UK) at 07:55-10:10 (Mon-Sun) and from Luxembourg to London-City at 11:00-11:30 (Mon-Sun), with some flights departing at 10:55 and others at 11:30.
From London-Heathrow, the airline is currently flying to Luxembourg daily at 07:55-10:15 (Mon) and 16:50-19:15 (Mon-Fri) and 10:10-12:35 (Sun): this service will be changed to the above from 27 March.
This announcement from British Airways is sure to put pressure on Luxair which traditionally has seen the London-City as one of its most profitable routes, one that has also been serviced by VLM and CityJet in the past.
The other destinations announced by British Airways yesterday from London-City include Barcelona (six times/week from 19 June), Milan (seven times/week from 27 March) and Thessaloniki (once/week from 18 June). The airline also announced that it will recommence flights to Jersey and Guernsey from 20 June to 2 September, operating on Mondays and Fridays.
