On Monday 30 June 2025, lux-Airport issued a statement regarding a recent runway incident at Luxembourg Airport in Findel.
According to the statement, a structural anomaly was detected on the centre line of the runway at Luxembourg Airport on Friday 13 June 2025. The issue prompted the immediate and precautionary closure of the runway to ensure the safety of air traffic operations. The anomaly, identified as a detachment of the asphalt top layer, led to the temporary suspension of flight operations. However, reduced runway operations helped mitigate the overall impact.
The decision to close the runway was taken in accordance with European aerodrome safety regulations, which lux-Airport said "reflects [its] unwavering commitment to the highest standards of operational safety". Lux-Airport added: "While such decisions are never taken lightly, the safety of passengers, crew and aircraft remains our top priority".
The anomaly was repaired promptly by the maintenance contractor responsible for runway upkeep, in close cooperation with lux-Airport teams. The statement emphasised that "all necessary safety protocols were rigorously followed to ensure the integrity of the repair and the safe resumption of operations".
Lux-Airport acknowledged that this incident is the latest in a series of technical defects affecting the newly renovated runway since its commissioning. These include repeated surface degradation. Despite several temporary repairs, the persistence of such issues continues to raise "legitimate questions" about the long-term performance and resilience of the renovated infrastructure.
According to lux-Airport, preliminary internal and external assessments indicate that the delivered infrastructure may not align with contractual specifications and performance expectations, notably the expectation of a defect-free runway that does not require continuous repairs and rectifications. In light of these findings, lux-Airport confirmed it is currently reviewing all available operational, technical and legal avenues, including the possibility of filing claims. These steps are being taken with the objective of safeguarding the airport's long-term operational reliability.
Lux-Airport concluded that its teams are working diligently to ensure the full restoration and continuous operability of the runway and to prevent any recurrence of similar incidents.
