The Belle Etoile shopping centre in Bertrange has announced that it is hosting an exhibition on automotive history from 5 to 24 August 2024.
The exhibition "100 Joer Mobil" promises to immerse visitors in a hundred years of automotive history, covering the period from 1860 to 1960.
The De Leederwon association has brought together hidden treasures from all over Luxembourg to present a selection of rare vehicles, such as the 1886 Benz Velo, an 1897 Clement tricycle with trailer and the 1927 Opel 4PS. Also on display is the very first VW Beetle sold in Luxembourg in 1948.
Visitors will also have an opportunity to discover vintage motorcycles and motorcycles, including models from the Gillet-Herstal, Sarolea and Ariel brands, as well as accessories from the period, such as motorcycle helmets, oil cans and number plates.
The Belle Etoile recalled that the first gas engine was invented by a Luxembourger - Etienne Lenoir was born in Mussy-la-Ville, which was part of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg at the time. This self-taught inventor presented the fruit of his work for the first time on 23 January 1860: an internal combustion engine that replaces the boiler to power a vehicle, without a horse.
To honour his work, the Lenoir foundation will exhibit a "faithful" and "functional" reproduction of the gas engine in the new gallery of the Belle Etoile and will hold conferences on the subject.
In addition, presentations on the first hydrogen car in Luxembourg and on motorcycle carburettors will be held throughout the exhibition.
