On the afternoon of Saturday 20 July 2024, the Cloud Factory Pizzeria in Esch-sur-Alzette broke its own national record for the longest pizza in Luxembourg by making 101m of Neapolitan pizza.

With only three pizzaiolos cooking the pizzas, the preparations for the day’s feat started at 07:00 on Saturday morning. Many long tables were arranged (with the help of a large number of volunteers) along the main shopping street, Rue de l’Alzette. A crowd had gathered by 13:00 – with families, friends and passersby staring at the longest pizza they had probably ever seen.

The organisers noted that the event attracted “even more people than last year” and stressed that it was meant to observe Neapolitan tradition, where a large family would gather around a big table to share pizza. Everyone present around the table was offered a free slice on the occasion.

Neapolitan pizza art has a thick, fluffy edge, a thin, soft base in the middle and generally a “purist” topping. Traditionally, Pizza Napoletana is only prepared in two varieties: pizza margherita (garnished with hand-crushed peeled tomatoes, mozzarella, fresh basil leaves and extra virgin olive oil) and pizza marinara (seasoned with only tomato sauce, extra virgin olive oil, oregano and garlic).
