The Representation of the European Commission in Luxembourg has confirmed details of this year's Europe Day official celebrations.
Europe Day - a public holiday in Luxembourg - is celebrated each year on 9 May. The day pays tribute to the Schuman Declaration of 9 May 1950 and celebrates the European values of peace, unity, solidarity, democracy and freedom.
This year, on Thursday 9 May from 12:00 to 18:00, the official celebrations in the Grand Duchy are taking place inside and outside the Konrad Adenauer building of the European Parliament in Luxembourg-Kirchberg, "symbolically evoking the upcoming European elections in 2024 and the role of democracy". In Luxembourg, these elections are being held on Sunday 9 June 2024.
This Europe Day, the European Parliament will open its doors to the public to allow them to "familiarise themselves with the institution that represents their voice within the [European] Union". The opening of the new interactive EU information centre "Europa Experience" is set to complement the programme and provide opportunities for visits.
This edition will also highlight the 20th anniversary of the 2004 enlargement, when ten countries joined the European Union.
The official ceremony will take place at 14:00 on 9 May in the presence of Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg, as well as the President of the Chamber of Deputies (parliament), Claude Wiseler, Luxembourg's Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade and Minister for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Affairs, Xavier Bettel, European Parliament Vice-President Marc Angel, European Commissioner (for Jobs and Social Rights) Nicolas Schmit and the Mayor of Luxembourg City, Lydie Polfer.
Moreover, various stands will be set up as part of the Democracy Village.
