The European Commission has announced that Margaritis Schinas, Vice President for Promoting our European Way of Life, and Nicolas Schmit, Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights and former Luxembourg Government Minister, will participate in an online event titled “Good prospects for all young people” on Thursday 12 May 2022, from 14:30 to 17:30.

This event will showcase how the reinforced European Youth Guarantee has supported young people so far and promote the launch of the new ALMA (Aim, Learn, Master, Achieve) initiative. Announced by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in her State of the Union address, ALMA will offer particularly disadvantaged or vulnerable young people supervised work experience abroad, complemented by intensive and tailor-made training before and after, in order to help them either get a job or go back to school.

President von der Leyen said: “Europe needs all its youth. We must encourage those who fall through the cracks. Those who do not have a job. Those who do not receive education or training. Because they too deserve to have an experience like Erasmus. To acquire skills, to create links and forge their own European identity".

On Wednesday afternoon, two high-level roundtables and testimonials from young people will offer the opportunity to reflect on how to best tackle these challenges and will allow participants to get acquainted with new European Union (EU) initiatives in the field of youth employment.

Among the participants of the event will be young people from all over Europe who have benefitted from similar programmes, as well as government representatives, including Marian Jurečka, Czech Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, representing the incoming Presidency of the Council of the EU, and representatives of the social partners and public employment services. They will discuss the challenges and opportunities related to youth employment and skills development. In addition, Member States will indicate their commitment to the new ALMA initiative through their operational programmes under the European Social Fund Plus (ESF+).

The event, which is part of the European Year of Youth, can be followed live via: https://webcast.ec.europa.eu/good-prospects-for-all-young-people-2022-05-12
