The Ministry of Culture has announced that the first-ever Luxembourg edition of the "Rendez-vous aux jardins" initiative will take place from 4 to 27 June 2021.
This event will bring together 50 partners offering 80 events in the Grand Duchy, all of which will revolve around the theme of “the transmission of knowledge”.
Owners and managers of historic and contemporary, private and public gardens have responded to the invitation of Luxembourg's Ministry of Culture to organise specific events for a wide variety of audiences. These "Rendez-vous aux jardins" aim to encourage everyone to (re)discover gardens through guided tours, conferences, demonstrations of know-how, meetings with owners and gardeners, exhibitions, text readings, concerts and evening opening hours.
With its first participation in the "Rendez-vous aux jardins" initiative, the Ministry of Culture intends to highlight Luxembourg's landscape heritage by recognising that a visit to a park or a garden can arouse emotions and lead to discoveries similar to that of a monument or a museum. Against the backdrop of a climate emergency, the garden is more than a cultural and social place. It is a place of memory, a convivial place of meditation; it represents a resource for the renewal of the planet.
Launched in 2018 by HEREIN, a European network for information and cooperation on cultural heritage which brings together European public administrations responsible for national policies and strategies in the cultural heritage sector, more than 3,000 gardens and parks in 20 European countries are taking part in this year's garden festival.
Luxembourg's Minister of Culture, Sam Tanson, explained: "To discover the gardens in the framework shared with the member countries of the Council of Europe, it is to pool on the international level the will to preserve, protect, conserve and enhance".
Initially scheduled to take place from 4 to 6 June, the enthusiastic response to the call for projects convinced the organisers to extend the duration of the initiative throughout the month of June, closing on 26 and 27 June with the 18th edition of the Oppe Gaardepärtchen festival, organised by the Ligue luxembourgeoise du coin de terre et du foyer.
On the agenda for this first Luxembourg edition are visits to historic gardens (Ansembourg, Colpach, Echternach, Mondorf-les-Bains, Luxembourg, Heintz van Landewyck, Villa Vauban, Kirchberg parks, Beaufort, Hunsdorf, Canopee- Pfaffenthal), public readings and concerts in the gardens of Wiltz and the Naturgaart Eschdorf and a performance of the UNESCO-protected hunting horns in Luxembourg City's parks. Several organisers are also offering cooking workshops to help people discover Luxembourg's gastronomic culture based on vegetables and herbs. Moreover, a book comprising 200 technical sheets on rose cultivation in Luxembourg will be published on the occasion of this first "Rendez-vous aux jardins".
