Bock Casemates;

The Luxembourg City Tourist Office (LCTO) has announced that on 1 March 2019, the Bock Casemates in Luxembourg city will open their doors again to visitors (access via the Montée de Clausen) following their annual closure during the winter months, until 3 November 2019.

Listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, these labyrinth underground galleries carved out of the rock are unique in the world and bear witness to the legendary fortress city's past. From 1 April to 15 September 2019, guided tours are organised three times a day. In 2018, a total of 130,463 visitors visited there, making this site the most popular tourist attraction of the capital.

The visit of the Bock Casemates in the Bock Rock, the cradle of the city of Luxembourg, is a "must" for any discerning visitor. A walk through the casemates is a lesson in history in the heart of the fortress city of yesteryear.

The Bock Casemates were set up by the Austrians in 1745/46. They reinforced the defence system of the citadel and were part of an extraordinary network of 23 km of underground galleries excavated over several floors and up to 40m deep. The 60-metre long gallery gives access to cannon chambers that allow you to discover extraordinary views of the city. The 47m deep well of the castle plunges the visitor into the mythical Luxembourg. The Bock Casemates could house a garrison of 1,200 soldiers with their equipment and about fifty guns.

For four centuries, Luxembourg was under foreign domination, and the best engineers of the new masters (Burgundians, Spaniards, French, Austrians, Germanic Confederation) transformed the city into one of the most coveted fortresses in Europe. After the dismantling in 1867 of the fortress, which was agreed in the Treaty of London in order to guarantee Luxembourg its neutrality after the decline of the German Confederation, the casemates were reduced to 17 km. In the 20th century, part of the underground was made accessible to the general public.
