On Monday, Luxembourg's Gilles Muller (ranked #23 on the ATP tour and seeded #19 in this tournament) won through his first round match at the US Open tennis championships at Flushing Meadow in New York by defeating Bernard Tomic in four sets.

Tomic, 24 years old from Australia and ranked #146 in the world, started the stronger and won the first set 6-3; from then on, however, the 19th seed won the next three sets 6-3, 6-4, 6-4, to earn a 3 sets to 1 win.
34 year-old Gilles Muller set the world alight earlier in the summer when he reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon, dispatching Rafael Nadal in the process; he has won two ATP tour titles this year so far, in Sydney (Australia) and in s-Hertogenbosch (The Netherlands).

Muller will meet 35 year-old Paolo Lorenzi (#40) from Italy, who defeated 28 year-old Joao Sousa of Portugal in 4 sets in the 1st round, in the 2nd round on Wednesday.
