Orange has reflected on its customers' mobile usage in Luxembourg on New Year’s Eve 2017.
Orange customers have been found to be turning increasingly often to their mobile internet to express their well wishes for the New Year. They exchanged more than 42 Terabytes (42,000 GB) of mobile internet for Christmas and New Year's Eve alone, a 45% increase over last year's holiday season. Meanwhile, the number of SMS dropped by 12% for the same periods.
The number of calls increased slightly (+ 5.6%) on Christmas Eve, whilst New Year's Eve calls dropped by 43% to make room for text messages but especially mobile internet. The number of SMS per minute was 128 for Christmas Eve while it reached 686 SMS/minute on New Year's Eve, for a total of 170,000 SMS.
Above all, mobile Internet continues to surge, having grown by 29% from 2016 to 2017 and by 45% from 2017 to 2018. There was even a +156% at rush hour, around 23:00, on 31 December. Moreover, 4G and 4G+ mobile internet overtook the consumption of 3G, a phenomenon linked to investments in 4G and 4G + over the last two years in the Grand Duchy.
These figures were measured between 20:00 and 08:00 for the nights from 24 to 25 December 2017 and from 31 December 2017 to 1 January 2018. The SMS only takes into account those sent by customers.
