On Friday 17 December 2021, Luxembourg statistics agency Statec reported sport economy in Luxembourg dropped to 1.1% of the gross domestic product (GDP) compared to 1.2% in 2016; the sport economy is defined as encompassing sportswear, sports facilities, employment in sport, etc.

Household spending on sports products and services increased by 22% from 2016 to 2020. Luxembourg residents spent €55.5 million on sportswear in 2020.

The study found that the infrastructure production increased by 53% from 2016 to 2020.

Sports facilities are also the main employer in the sports economy. They employ on average 40% of the workforce in the sector from 2016 to 2020, with a peak of 46% in 2020. Employment in this category doubled its growth rate in 2020, from 9% in previous years at 21%.

In 2019, 664 coaches, 62 administrative executives and 256 athletes were employed by clubs in Luxembourg.

The productivity of the sports infrastructure sector is on average 1.3 times higher than the productivity of the national economy. This largely contributes to the fact that the sports economy has a higher productivity than the national economy.

Overall, the sports economy increased its output by 2% in the above period.

In terms of sports media production and employment, levels remained stable between 2016 and 2020. Average production amounted €6.2 million and 53.7 full-time equivalent (FTE) employment. The productivity of this sector is 0.9 times lower than the national productivity.

Between 2016 and 2019, membership fees for clubs and associations grew an average of 5% per year. In 2020, they increased by 2%, showing that members remained loyal to their clubs during a pandemic and have not stopped their contributions, despite the cessation temporary activities.
