Luxembourg has climbed two places in the European Commission's Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI) 2021.

On Friday 12 November 2021, the European Commission published the new version of its annual DESI report based on information collected from Member States of the European Union (EU).

Luxembourg climbed two spots to place 8th out of 27 countries with an overall score of 59/100. The Grand Duchy particularly excelled in terms of connectivity, where it ranked 4th. This high score resulted in particular from the implementation of 5G infrastructures and continued optical fibre coverage.

At the same time, Luxembourg is increasing the proportion of ICT specialists in its working population, for which it is above the European average. The DESI report also noted the rapid increase in the proportion of female ICT specialists.

“We are rewarded for our investments. But we are not stopping there: the ambition of our new ultra-high speed strategy is not only to continue the deployment of latest generation technologies, but also to offer quality infrastructures across socio-economic cleavages and less well connected places”, commented Luxembourg's Prime Minister Xavier Bettel.

Regarding digital public services, Luxembourg scored 79.4 out of 100, which places it well above the European average of 68.1. The report underlined that the Grand Duchy has made great progress in this area and ranks 3rd in the provision of digital public services to businesses, with a score of 97 out of 100.

The DESI report also noted the high proportion of future investments in the context of the Recovey and Resilience Facility which are planned in particular for the purposes of digital skills, the digitalisation of public administration, telemedicine and ultra-secure communication based on quantum technologies.
