Davide Piganzoli Wins 2026 Škoda Tour de Luxembourg

On Sunday 20 September 2026, several hundred cycling fans welcomed the riders at the finish on Avenue Victor Hugo in Luxembourg-Limpertsberg, where 24-year-old Italian Davide Piganzoli (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) secured overall victory in the Škoda Tour de Luxembourg.

The fifth and final stage covered 177 kilometres from Mersch to Luxembourg-Limpertsberg. Riders faced the climbs of Nommern, Gralingen, Kautenbach and Misärshaff before reaching the capital for a finishing circuit featuring three ascents of the Pabeierbierg. The circuit also included the race’s final bonus sprint.

Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Premier Tech) attacked alone from the start in Mersch and remained ahead for the entire stage. Six riders set off in pursuit, including Luxembourg’s Loïc Bettendorff and Larry Valvasori (National Team Luxembourg), but could not catch the Dutch rider. When the peloton caught the chasers with 45 kilometres remaining, Van der Poel still held a lead of three minutes and 30 seconds.

Attacks continued on the finishing circuit, notably from Søren Kragh Andersen (Lidl-Trek) and Pepijn Reinderink (Soudal Quick-Step). Mikkel Frølich Honoré (EF Education-EasyPost) eventually broke clear of the chasing group, but Van der Poel maintained his lead to claim his second stage victory of the week. Honoré finished second, one minute and four seconds behind, while Reinderink took third at 1:09. Piganzoli crossed the line fourth.

The result gave Davide Piganzoli the overall victory in 16:22:17, with Matteo Vercher (TotalEnergies) finishing second, 52 seconds behind, and Thomas Gachignard (TotalEnergies) third at 54 seconds. Piganzoli also won the young rider classification. Reflecting on the final stage, he said: “I feel really good. Today, the whole team rode an incredible race. We managed it very well. We let the breakaway go, then the other teams worked for the victory, but Mathieu was the strongest and he deserves his victory. This morning, we started with the plan to target the general classification. That was our objective, and I felt really good during the race. The team did a great job, and here we are.”

Mathieu van der Poel said his solo attack had not been planned: “It was not the plan before the start, but I found myself alone from the beginning of the race and rode at my own pace all day. At first, I thought the chasers would catch up, but I kept riding at the same power and the gap grew again. That was when I decided to go flat out until the finish. My legs were incredible today.” He added: “On the previous days, they were not the legs I wanted: I had come from Spain and perhaps trained a little too much. I like coming to Luxembourg. It is a beautiful, well-organised race, so I am happy to win the final stage.”

Mathieu van der Poel also won the points classification with 54 points and the mountains classification with 28 points. He was named the most aggressive rider of the final stage. Luxembourgish sprinter Patrizia Van Der Weken, a medallist at the World and European Indoor Athletics Championships, presented the mountains classification award. Luxembourg’s Minister for Digitalisation, Stéphanie Obertin, presented the bonus sprint award.

TotalEnergies won the team classification with a combined time of 49:13:27. Luxembourg’s Minister of Finance, Gilles Roth, presented the team award.
