On Wednesday 8 July 2026, BGL Ligue runners-up FC Differdange 03 began their 2026/27 UEFA Conference League campaign by hosting Finnish runners-up Ilves in the first leg of the first qualifying round.

A crowd of 1,355 spectators attended the match at the Stade Municipal de la Ville de Differdange.

Head coach Pedro Resende, who returned to FC Differdange 03 this summer after a one-year absence, handed starting debuts to three new signings: Brazilian forward Gustavo Vintecinco, Honduran left-back Elison Rivas and Luxembourg international Sébastien Thill.

The opening stages were closely contested, with neither side creating a clear opportunity. The visitors registered the first attempt on goal in the fifteenth minute when Matias Rale met a corner at the far post, but the Ilves defender headed wide. Three minutes later, Joona Veteli fired over the crossbar after Felipe had punched away a free-kick delivered into the penalty area. Another dangerous set-piece from the Finnish side followed shortly afterwards, but the cross evaded everyone and was comfortably collected by the Differdange goalkeeper.

The Luxembourg runners-up gradually grew into the match. Sébastien Thill tested the Ilves defence with a long-range effort in the 26th minute before narrowly failing to reach a dangerous cross at the far post a minute later. Geoffrey Franzoni then tried his luck from the edge of the penalty area on 34 minutes, sending his effort wide, while Sebastian Thill also came close from a corner shortly before the break, attempting an acrobatic finish that failed to make contact with the ball. The teams went into half-time level at 0-0.

Differdange started the second half brightly. Three minutes after the restart, Elison Rivas delivered a low cross into the box, but Rafa Pinto was unable to direct his effort on target. Ilves responded moments later with a dangerous free-kick from around 22 metres, but Felipe produced an excellent save to deny captain Jardell Kanga's curling effort into the top corner.

The Finnish club began to threaten more frequently after the hour mark. Anton Popovitch forced Felipe into another save with a powerful strike from distance before Teemu Hytönen was denied a clear run on goal by last-ditch defending from the Differdange backline. Teemu Hytönen created another promising opportunity in the 72nd minute, driving into the penalty area before cutting the ball back to Jardell Kanga, whose first-time effort flew over the crossbar.

Neither side managed to find a breakthrough during the closing stages. Ilves had the ball in the net in the 88th minute, but the effort was ruled out for offside. With the hosts lacking the final pass and the visitors unable to convert their chances, the first leg ended in a goalless draw.

After the match, FC Differdange 03 head coach Pedro Resende acknowledged that his team had faced a difficult opponent, particularly given the different stages of the two teams' seasons. He told Chronicle.lu: "It was difficult because they are a quality team. They have already played eighteen league matches, while for us it is still pre-season. We also have several new players and I am a new coach here again. I was here before, but this is a new beginning.” He added: "I am happy with my players because I think we had some good moments with the ball and were well organised. I don't remember the opponent creating any really big chances, and I don't think my goalkeeper had to make a major save. They are a good team with a good dynamic, but we are still not 100% physically, so overall I am pleased with the performance."

The return leg will take place at the Tammelan Stadion in Tampere, Finland, on Thursday 16 July 2026.
