Following an initial announcement in January 2015 that a new National Stadium for football and rugby would be constructed between Cessange and Gasperich (across from the Cloche d'Or) at a cost of €65 million and be completed by January 2019, firm details were presented at a press conference on thursday at the Hotel de Ville in Luxembourg city centre; the plans have been detailed and the budget has reduced to just over €61 million.

In the presence of Paul Philipp, President of the Luxembourg Football Federation, and Steve Karier, President of the Luxemburgish Rugby Federation, Lydie Polfer, Mayor, and Simone Beissel, Sports Alderman, and Luxembourg's Minister for Sport, Romain Schneider, presented the current situation.

Work is due to commence at the site in 6 months time for the 9,385-capacity stadium (all covered seats) which will also include VIP areas, food kiosks, a business club with kitchen, rooms and premises for the press, locker rooms and various ancillary functions. Most of these functional premises are to be housed in a three-storey building within the stadium next boulevard de Kockelscheuer. The stadium envelope consists of diamond-shaped metallic facade elements staged by an illumination with varied scenarios.

The stadium will be built in accordance with current standards, especially FIFA / UEFA standards (stadium category 4) and IRB (International Rugby Board) standards.

The budget estimate for the detailed final project for the construction of the new national football / rugby stadium amounts to €60,358,250.00 (including tax). The project is being subsidised by the Ministry of Sports (70%), capped at €40 million.

The budget estimate for the development of the multifunctional parking area amounts to €791,826.75 (100% provided by the City of Luxembourg).

Meanwhile, the timeline has been extended, with the end of construction now foreseen for October 2019, following the start of earthworks and construction in May 2017 - this is dependent on the progress of the related road project. The actual construction is scheduled to start in September 2017.
