The US Embassy in Luxembourg has announced it will host a film screening of How It Feels to Be Free and a discussion with Yoruba Richen, the film’s director, on Tuesday 21 November 2023 at 17:45 in Luxembourg-Limpertsberg.
The event will kick off with a welcoming reception, setting the stage for a moderated conversation between Yoruba Richen and representatives from Luxembourg non-profit organisation We Belong Europe. The dialogue will delve into the crucial topics of representation and visibility of women of colour in the media and filmmaking.
Directed by Yoruba Richen and produced by Alicia Keys, How It Feels to Be Free is a documentary that explores the narratives of six famous African-American women entertainers, namely Lena Horne, Abbey Lincoln, Nina Simone, Diahann Carroll, Cicely Tyson and Pam Grier. These trailblazing women challenged an entertainment industry resistant to their presence, transforming both themselves and their audiences. The film features interviews with the aforementioned stars and commentary by luminaries such as Halle Berry, Shonda Rhimes and Samuel L. Jackson, examining their enduring impact on reshaping the narrative of Black female identity in Hollywood and advocating for social change.
Yoruba Richen, an award-winning documentary filmmaker, has left a mark with works featured on major platforms including Netflix, MSNBC, Hulu, HBO and PBS. Notable projects include The Rebellious Life of Mrs Rosa Parks, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and received a Peabody Award. Richen's recent Emmy-nominated films include American Reckoning (Frontline) and The Sit In: Harry Belafonte Hosts the Tonight Show (Peacock). Her new film, The Cost of Inheritance, addressing the complex issue of reparations in the United States, premiered at DOC NYC on Sunday 12 November 2023.
