The Luxembourg Institute of Health has announced that its Clinical and Epidemiological Investigation Centre (CIEC) will be celebrating the International Clinical Trials’ Day by screening the 1990 film Awakenings at 18:00 on Friday 27 May 2016 at Utopolis Cinema in Belval.

Robin Williams stars in the film that tells a true story about the British neurologist Oliver Sacks, who, in 1969, discovered beneficial effects of the drug L-Dopa, the gold-standard treatment for Parkinson’s disease. The film also features Robert De Niro, John Heard, Ruth Nelson and Julie Kavner. The film will be screened in English with French subtitles.

A research programme established by the Fond National de la Recherche, the CIEC has been charged with the task to find new ways for an earlier diagnosis and better treatment of Parkinson’s disease.

The International Clinical trials’ day is celebrated each year around 20 May in honour of James Lind’s first clinical trial in 1747. The trial resulted in the development of the theory that citrus fruits cured scurvy.
