On Tuesdsy 27 October 2015, Utopia SA and the Institut Pierre Werner will be holding a special screening of the film 'Une jeunesse allemande - Eine deutsche Jugend', featuring director Jean-Gabriel Périot.
The filmmaker will present his film before it is broadcast and participate in the debate hall following the showing. This debate, open to the public, will be lef by Gian Maria Tore from the University of Luxembourg.
The documentary traces the path of the founders of the Red Army Faction (RAF; Rote Armee Fraktion in German) by drawing on their images, media interventions and their films. We follow the lives of intellectual Ulrike Meinhof, journalist Andreas Baader, filmmaker Holger Meins, Gudrun Ensslin and lawyer Horst Mahler, who began as young men of the extreme left and ended up radicalised. Over the years, they conducted terrorist actions against the RFA, the US military and management.
"My films paint a bleak picture of humanity: concentration camps, Hiroshima, prison..." commented Jean-Gabriel Périot. "Yet it is never about [...] crushing the viewer into pessimism or imposing a moral lesson on them and forcing them to a memory exercise. On the contrary, it is always for me about watching humanity at its most fallible and rejecting this suffering, but also to draw the strength to hope and love a fragile humanity".
