There is currently an orange awareness level alert in place (i.e. medium risk/danger).

The food safety authority noted that E. coli can cause symptoms such as fever, watery diarrhoea (sometimes bloody), severe nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. The illness is mainly self-limiting and typically lasts for eight to ten days. The populations most at risk from E. coli include pregnant women, immunocompromised individuals, young children and the elderly. A rare but severe complication, known as haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS), can develop in more fragile individuals, particularly young children, where it mainly affects the kidneys.

People who have consumed a contaminated product and are experiencing symptoms should seek medical advice and disclose their exposure. Symptoms may vary from person to person and in severity depending on the extent of infection.
