Luxembourg will be launching a national campaign aimed at enforcing the ban on the free distribution of plastic bags in establishments from next week.

As of Monday 4 November 2019, the Customs and Excise Agency (at the request of the Environment Agency) will carry out checks to ensure that establishments across the Grand Duchy are no longer distributing plastic bags free of charge.

Agents from the Environment Agency will then check on the non-compliant establishments a second time, in the case of continued non-compliance, issue a fine of €500 or €1,000, depending on the size of the establishment.

The campaign forms part of efforts to prevent and reduce the use of single-use plastics in Luxembourg. Since 31 December 2018, the law has prohibited the free distribution of plastic bags in establishments selling products and goods.

Further details of these checks and the results of the campaign will be published at a later stage.
