The Luxembourg Ministry of Health and food safety authorities have urged caution in the public after the European Commission rapid alert system reported that the 'Vitamin E hochdosiert' product from the 'Biofood' brand was shown to contain 77 times the daily recommended dose of Vitamin E.

Vitamin E deficiencies are rare, as food often easily accounts for the approximate 12 mg daily requirement for adults and the vitamin is stored in the liver and fats, meaning it is not destryoed by the body.

By contrast, consistent high doses of Vitamin E, as in the case of other vitamins, over a prolonged period of time have been found to present health risks and have been associated with the onset of certain cancers, leading the food safety authorities of the Grand Duchy to recommend that members of the public stop consuming the product.

The product, originating from the Netherlands, claims to be an 'Anti-Aging-Vitamin' and an 'effective antioxidant' for 'a strong, healthy heart'. The product is sold online at Amazon websites, and an online publication by the Sécurité alimentaire of Luxembourg, entitled 'Dietary supplements: Miracle Remedies or False Promises?' claimed that supplements bought on the internet may not carry a guarantee that they have been created under Luxembourgish or European legislation.
