Ultra HD looks set to continuously grow in interest and uptake among consumers, broadcasters and the industry, according to a report published today by satellite services provider SES S.A.

In the White Paper entitled, 'Ready. Steady. Ultra HD', the satellite operator reported on the various Ultra HD (UHD) breakthroughs that have occured in the last year, including the first live UHD broadcast of the televised concerts featuring banks Linkin Park and Die Fantastichen Vier.

In April 2015, SES delivered the first live linear UHD broadcast to a cable system in the US and in July initiated the very first live and linear Ultra HD trial with cable operator Armstrong. This was followed by the first global UHD fashion and entertainment channel, Fashion One 4K.

The company stated that Ultra HD, offering four times the resolution of HD with 3840x2160 pixels, is on the up an up, with reasonably-priced 4K/Ultra HD televisions hitting shops, more sports and lifestyle channels being launched, Hollywood blockbusters becoming filmed in Ultra HD for visual impact, and the UHD Blu-ray disc format on its way.

"Demos, content, high-technical standards, devices, delivery infrastructure – the elements that enable Ultra HD are falling into place," stated the SES White Paper. "The dynamics driving Ultra HD development can be best described as a virtuous circle, composed of elements that mutually reinforce one another for bigger and better outcomes across business and consumer markets."
