Communications technology and services network Ericsson and international satellite services provider Intelsat today announced that they have collaborated to become the first companies in the world to showcase a High Dynamic Range (HDR) HD contribution feed to the RAI Exhibition and Convention Centre in Amsterdam.
The feed, obtained via the Intelsat 905 satellite using the DVB-SX2 standard and an open, non-proprietary workflow, will allow media companies to benefit from improved picture quality and new experiences with HD HDR, whilst gaining even greater efficiencies in transponder utilisation.
The two companise had previously held a longstanding partnership in TV innovation, having joined forces to deliver the first ever transmission of a 4K Ultra HD satellite signal in North America in 2013.
"Our customers need to deliver the best possible content experiences and we are constantly seeking new ways to bring greater satisfaction to our customers’ viewers," stated Peter Ostapiuk, Head of Media Product Services, Intelsat. "By combining the versatility of Intelsat’s satellite network with creativity, vision and technological expertise, Intelsat and Ericsson continue to push the envelope and innovate in offering various technical and transmission options to improve current video quality. This project marks an important next step in the future of broadcasting at a time when picture quality and the viewer experience are so vital to remaining competitive and retaining audiences."
The quality enhancement of the HD contribution feed is achieved using the greater transmission efficiencies of the DVB-SX2 satellite broadcasting standard which simultaneously avoids incurring any bandwidth losses. In this respect, satellite TV service providers may easily upgrade existing legacy infrastructures.
"Ericsson's extensive research into the habits and behaviours of TV consumers consistently shows that the ability to deliver great content of ever higher quality is a must-have for any successful TV service provider," explained Elisabetta Romano, Vice President and Head of TV & Media at Ericsson, which holds arund 115,000 professionals and customers in 180 different countries.
She continued: "As industry leaders in immersive TV, we have long been advocating the benefits of adding HDR into the potential for both HD and UHD services, and we are excited to show that this can be done in an extremely efficient and cost-effective way with this new proof-of-concept. Our customers expect Ericsson to continually innovate and bring value in both their business evolution and the services they offer consumers. We look forward to highlighting this innovation at IBC 2015."
The full live demo will be shown by Ericsson at booth #1.D61 at the renowned technology conference IBC 2015, running from 10 to 15 September 2015.
