Luxembourg Touch (rugby) won their first international tournament at Ottignies Brussels last Saturday.
The St Nicolas cup organised by Brussels Touch featured 10 mixed teams of men and women from around Europe. Struggling early on against the Parisian team TR91 which consisted of players from the French National teams, Luxembourg regained their composure to win their way to a final against local favorites Kituro from Belgium.
For many of the Belgium team, this was the opportunity to avenge a defeat in the 2014 Euros where Luxembourg men's elite squad finished a credible 6th. However, due to sound defence and great commitment from the women in the squad, Luxembourg eventually ran out winners. This is the first international competition that Luxembourg has won.
‘This win builds on encouraging performances at the Euro’s last year’ said team captain Edoardo Angioni. ‘Having over half the squad being under 20 shows that we are getting younger players into the club that can enable us to be competitive in these international competions. Also teaming up with Walfer Ladies shows we could potentially have a strong mixed team for the European championships to be held in Jersey next year.’
