Luxembourg’s Ministry of Education, Children and Youth has confirmed that the fifth edition of the Summer School, which offers free and optional remedial lessons in public schools at the end of the summer school holidays, is taking place from Monday 2 to Friday 13 September 2024.

The Summer School is an opportunity for students of primary and secondary school to refresh their knowledge, consolidate what they have learned during the past school year, fill in knowledge gaps and catch up on coursework in their main courses.

This initiative was launched in 2020 to fill the gaps linked to the COVID-19 crisis. In the meantime, it has become one of the tutoring strategies offered by the Luxembourg education system and aims to take into account the heterogeneity of students' needs, contributing to more equal opportunities.

In total, 7,085 students registered for Summer School this year, including 5,258 for the offer of guided activities at the primary level and 1,827 for the offer at the secondary level. In 2023, the Summer School programme recorded nearly 6,300 registrations.

The most frequented lessons in primary school education were German lessons, followed by those of mathematics. Language course registrations represent 73.43% of the overall inscriptions in primary education. In secondary education, mathematics courses were the most in-demand with 37.54%, followed by French courses (29.23% of registrations) and German courses (25.39% of registrations).

447 volunteers mobilised

In primary school education, tutoring is provided by 286 volunteers, including 78 teachers and 208 students (at least baccalaureate holders).

In secondary education, students are supervised by 161 volunteers, including 38 teachers and 123 students (at least baccalaureate holders). The students had to first follow an online training course organised by the National Education Training Institute (Institut de Formation de l’Education Nationale - IFEN) and the SCRIPT.

The Summer School courses are based on thematic files developed by the Coordination Service for Educational and Technological Research and Innovation (SCRIPT) for each main subject (German, French and mathematics in primary education; German, French, English and mathematics in secondary education) and classes from cycle 2 to 4th grade.

These files are accessible on the platform www.summerschool.lu via the student's IAM from 15 July until 15 September 2024. They also include model answers and can be used independently or with the help of parents, at any time during the school holidays. Between 15 July and 28 August 2024, the ministry confirmed that the platform was visited nearly 15,000 times, while the proposed files were downloaded more than 23,000 times.
