On Friday 4 August 2023, Luxembourg's Ministry of National Education, Children and Youth, published details of how to give (used) school textbooks a second life here in the Grand Duchy.
They announced that the app.mybooks.lu application providing access to the list of compulsory textbooks for public secondary education is now operational for the 2023/2024 school year.
This concerns pupils in classical and general secondary education classes as well as vocational training, pupils attending classes offering the European Schools programme, classes leading to the International Baccalaureate, English-speaking classes leading to British diplomas as well as classes in private schools applying the Luxembourg public education curriculum.
A simple approach
Students can connect directly to the app.mybooks.lu application with their IAM.
Parents of students can access the application via the myeduguichet.lu website. This platform also allows parents to access a whole catalogue of online services, whether for basic education or secondary education.
Collect books from partner bookstores
The books ordered can then be picked up free-of-charge from a bookshop. The list of partner bookshops as well as further information on the functioning of the site are available on www.mybooks.lu.
For general secondary education, students in preparatory classes, reception classes, CLIJA and CLIJAA classes receive their textbooks in their secondary school. The latter orders directly from booksellers and students do not have to go through the application to acquire their books. The same applies to students attending classes leading to the International Baccalaureate.
Pupils who use second-hand textbooks receive a voucher for 50% of the price of new books not ordered. The voucher allows them to buy books (non-free textbooks or other books) in partner bookstores of the myBooks programme. It is valid until 29 June 2024.
A second life for school books
The Ministry of National Education, Children and Youth encourages the sustainable and responsible use of school textbooks by calling on pupils to donate school books that they no longer use, on the one hand, and to acquire books already used, on the other hand. Pupils thus recovering school books that have already been used can go to one of the partner bookstores and benefit from a voucher for 50% of the value of new school books not ordered.
