On Thursday 3 August 2023, Luxembourg's Ministry of National Education, Children and Youth confirmed that, of the 5,507 pupils who finished primary school in the Grand Duchy, the vast majority (5,489) will continue to secondary education, while 18 (0.3%) will "benefit from an extended cycle 4" in 2023/2024.

The rates of orientation towards the different levels of secondary education remain stable within the range of the very slight fluctuations of recent years. 39.1% will go forward to a lycée classique, while 28.3% will go forward to a general lycée (formerly lycée technique) and 12.3% will go into a preparation class.

According to the ministry, the rate of agreement between the opinions of parents and those of teachers remains very high: it stands at 99.5%.

Orientation committee

The orientation procedure provides that, in the event of disagreement between the parents and the teacher, an orientation committee takes a final decision for the orientation of the student concerned. This was the case for 25 students.

For 22 of these pupils, the commissions confirmed the orientation opinion of the educational team and directed the pupils towards another educational path than that requested by the parents. In three cases, the parents' orientation opinion was retained.
