Luxembourg's Ministry of Education, Children and Youth has announced the return of the free Summer School for public school students wishing to receive additional support in particular subjects.
Like last year, public schools in Luxembourg are offering optional and free catch-up classes this summer from 30 August to 10 September 2021.
In 2020, the classes enabled around 4,800 primary school pupils and nearly 1,100 secondary school students to work on areas for improvement.
The registration procedures are described below. If necessary, parents and students can also get information from the helpline: 8002-9090.
Primary education
During the end-of-year teacher-parent meetings, teachers can suggest, according to the student's needs, that parents enrol their child in a Summer School course. Parents can also request this during the meeting. In case of agreement, the teacher will proceed with the registration.
Primary classes on offer include mathematics, German and French. Lessons will take place from 30 August to 3 Septmeber 2021 for pupils in cycles 2.2 and 3.2, from 6 to 10 September 2021 for cycle 2.1 and 3.1 pupils and from 30 August to 10 September for cycle 4.1 pupils.
So as not to overwhelm the children during their last weeks of holidays and to respect their physiological needs, each pupil can only attend one class, lasting one week. Depending on the cycle and the subject, the one-week course can have six, ten or twelve lessons (one lesson = 55 minutes). Classes are spread over five weekday mornings and three afternoons.
Cycle 4.2 students will follow courses organised in the secondary school in which they are enroled for the year 2021-22. They will receive a form from their class teacher indicating the course they are advised to take. They then give this form to the secretary of their future secondary school.
The parents of pupils in a public international school should contact the establishment's secretary directly.
Secondary education
Two types of lessons are offered in secondary schools:
- catch-up classes, which are intended for students who have to take a postponement test in September (subjects: German, English, French, mathematics, biology, natural sciences, chemistry and physics);
-
refresher courses, which are aimed at pupils who wish to fill the gaps in their knowledge (subjects: German, English, French and mathematics).
Studentsl can enrol in a maximum of two subjects.
Classes are taking place this year in each secondary school. Registrations are made directly with the school secretary, subject to availability.
For each course, ten lessons are planned (one lesson = 50 minutes), taught in blocks of two lessons. Secondary schools can spread the lessons over one or two weeks.
Like last year, the Summer School learning sessions are based on material developed by SCRIPT (Service de coordination de la recherche et de l’innovation pédagogiques et technologiques) for each subject and each class. This material will be accessible (via the student's IAM) on the www.schouldoheem.lu platform from 15 July 2021. They also include answers and can thus be used independently or accompanied by parents at any time during the school holidays.
