On Tuesday 22 December 2020, Luxembourg's Minister of Education, Children and Youth, Claude Meisch, held a press conference on the new government measures in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and their impact on schools and childcare facilities.

Following the government announcement on Monday, Minister Claude Meisch confirmed that all schools will switch back to remote learning for at least one week after the Christmas holidays. The Education Minister emphasised that attendance is mandatory during this week.

Childcare facilities will close their doors from 28 December 2020 to 10 January 2021, except for the children of healthcare workers. Other parents may apply for family leave (see guichet.lu).

From Monday 4 to Friday 8 January 2021, students and teachers will use existing digital resources for distance learning. School lessons will be streamed online, with primary school pupils receiving exercises to complete at home. In secondary schools, final year exams in January have been pushed back to the following week to allow students to catch up.

Adult education and music schools will also switch to distance learning, while extracurricular activities have been suspended for the week of 4 to 8 January.

Minister Claude Meisch highlighted the need to offer today's students the same opportunities as their predecessors, despite the COVID-19 health crisis.

From 11 January, students aged 4-19 and staff members will receive PCR test invitations and classrooms will be equipped with CO2 measuring devices for ventilation purposes.

The Education Minister also confirmed that a working group was considering whether to prioritise teachers after healthcare workers and vulnerable people once vaccination commences.
