The Grand Duke of Luxembourg has appointed Luc Frieden "formateur" of the new government.

On Monday 9 October 2023, one day after the legislative elections in Luxembourg, Grand Duke Henri invited Luc Frieden to lead coalition talks to form a new government.

Mr Frieden ran as lead candidate for the Christian Social People's Party (CSV) during the 2023 legislative elections. The CSV once again emerged as the largest party in the Grand Duchy, retaining its 21 seats in parliament.

Following his official appointment as "formateur", Luc Frieden is now tasked with forming Luxembourg's next government (with the real possibility of becoming the next prime minister).

Earlier on Monday, Grand Duke Henri met with outgoing Prime Minister Xavier Bettel who formally submitted the resignation of his government (DP-LSAP-Greens triple coalition) following the elections.

The Grand Duke also met with the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Fernand Etgen, and the President of the Council of State, Christophe Schiltz, as well as the presidents and representatives of the political parties sitting in the newly elected Chamber of Deputies.
