Jean Asselborn was the speaker at the "Zeit Wissenschaft Forum" in Hamburg, Germany, on 1 March 2016.
Jean Asselborn, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister for Immigration and Asylum of Luxembourg was invited by the German weekly Die Zeit to participate in a conference for the "Zeit Wissen Preis - Mut zur Nachhaltigkeit".
Alongside Dr. Simone Eick, Director of the Centre of German Emigration in Bremerhaven, the founder and president of the Sauti Kuu Foundation in Nairobi, Dr. Auma Obama, and the President of the Central Association of German crafts Berlin, Peter Wollseifer, Minister Asselborn participated in a discussion which aimed to take stock of the growing economic migration from the African continent and to have an exchange of views on the benefits of immigration policy for a Europe confronted with an aging population.
Before an audience of nearly 400 people, mostly composed of people of academic and civil society and journalists, Minister Asselborn delivered a thorough analysis of actions taken regarding migration both inside the European Union and beyond it.
He also advocated the capacity of the EU to positively influence the economic and social development in the poorest regions and there enhance living conditions, while promoting greater coherence in European immigration policy and insisting on the need for European solutions to common challenges.
