On Monday, Serge Muller of the SNCA presented an overview of the automobile market in Luxembourg, looking into detail at a number of issues from sales figures, the average age of vehicles on the road, the percentage of diesel, petrol and electric vehicles registered, engine emmissions and driving licence numbers.
While the growth in the numbers of vehicles in Luxembourg has seen a steady rise since 2000 (297,263 to 410,771), the number of new vehicles registered in Luxembourg has seen dips in 2009, 2013 and again in 2015, with 50,280 new vehicles registered in 2015 (53,150 in 2014).
While the number of new cars (1st year of registration) exceeded the number of second-hand vehicles (re-registrations) between 2003 and 2012, this trend has been reversed since then, with 55,061 second-hand cars registered in 2015 compared to 46,673 new cars in the same period.
Since 2000, the average age of vehicles rose very slowly from 6.2 years in 2000 to 6.6 years in 2012, whit it started to rise significantly to 7.7 years in 2015.
In 1999 the number of newly-registered diesel engine vehicles rose above newly-registered petrol engine vehicles for the first time; in 2015 70.7% were diesel, 28.6% petrol, plus 0.01% hybrid and 0.002% electric.
Since 1995, the average emmissions of individual cars stood at 197 grams CO2/km; this statistic has seen a steady decline to the 2015 figure of 128.64 grams CO2/km.
The number of driving licences has also increased steadily over the years, with 29,869 valid driving liceces in circulation in 1998, compared to 61,103 in 2015.
