
On Monday 24 March 2025, Luxembourg’s Ministry of Culture announced details of its decision to award seven musical commissions for various Luxembourgish and resident composers.
As part of its policy to support musical creation, the Ministry of Culture issued a public call for musical works commissioned in 2024. According to the ministry, this initiative generated considerable interest within the musical community, with 23 applications submitted for seven available commissions. The ministry has now announced that the total budget allocated to these commissions was €70,000.
The compositions have been awarded to the following orchestras and ensembles:
- Luca Vaillancourt for the Luxembourg Military Band;
- Christophe Mirkes for the European Soloists Luxembourg (Solistes Européens Luxembourg - SEL);
- Ivan Boumans for United Instruments of Lucilin;
- Catherine Kontz for Kammerata Luxembourg;
- Markus Brönnimann for the Orchestre de Chambre de Luxembourg (OCL);
- Gilles Grethen for the Estro Armonico Orchestra;
- Tatsiana Zelianko for the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra (OPL).
In addition, the ministry reported that it awarded a commission to Tatsiana Zelianko for the creation of a composition in homage to the Luxembourgish composer Joséphine Schmoll (1836-1925). This string quintet piece will be performed on Tuesday 8 July 2025, at the LUGA Culture Hub in Luxembourg-Belair.
The Ministry of Culture welcomed the enthusiasm and artistic diversity which emerged from this initiative, confirming the importance of supporting musical creation in Luxembourg.
