On Friday 27 November 2015, opderschmelz will be offering a triple bill of blues with Brother Dege, Hundred Seventy Split and Heavy Petrol for its winter Blues Night.
Although the name Dege Legg, or Brother Dege, was on everyone's lips after his song 'Too Old to Die Young' was used by Quentin Tarantino in the Oscar-winning film 'Django Unchained', the musician was not unknown beforehand, having himself won multiple awards and produced a total of ten albums. On a radioshow Tarantino himself said of the musician: " [...] frankly, every track on the Brother Dege CD could have been in the movie. It's like a greatest hits album".
Of Cajun, Irish and Indian origin, Dege Legg was raised in the heart of Louisiana and has breathed new life into the Delta Blues with his slide guitar-playing. The harsh twang of his dobro conjures up ghosts of the past and his experiences in the south of the USA, where his playing fields were the local marshes.
Also joining the blues roster will be Leo Lyons and Joe Gooch formerly of legendary band Ten Years After, which the respective bassist and singer/guitarist left to join drummer Damon Sawyer in the creation of Hundred Seventy Split. In 2010 the trio released the debut album 'The World Will Not Stop', with their new album 'HSS' seeing them hit the road again to tour Europe. Their performance will incorporate new Hundred Seventy Split hits with classics from Ten Years After.
The Blues Night line up also features Heavy Petrol, which started simply as old friends meeting up to jam together and grew into a fully-fledge Blues-n-Rock band. Bassist Dan Kries, vocalist Woody Lunari, drummer Daniel Juchem and guitarists Gigi Felten and Steve Richer fuse blues and rock with their own modern style, as well as cover songs by musical greats such as Johnny Winter, Jimi Hendrix, Muddy Waters and Freddie King.
Entrance to Blues Night costs €20 for pre-sale tickets plus a charge or €25 on the door, and is free for individuals with a Kulturpass. Pre-sale for students is €5 plus a charge or €7 on the door. The evening will begin at 19:30 in the Grand Auditoire at opderschmelz. For more information and to buy tickets, click here.
