The 24th edition of the "Luxembourg Museum Days" will take place on 15 and 16 May 2021; over these two days, visitors are being offered free access to the permanent collections and temporary exhibitions of 45 museums and art galleries throughout the Grand Duchy.
The 2021 edition of the Luxembourg Museum Days is being organised for the first time by ICOM Luxembourg, the Luxembourg National Committee of the International Council of Museums (ICOM), in collaboration with the d'stater muséeën and Musées Luxembourg groups, and with the support of Luxembourg's Ministry of Culture.
Launched in 1997 on the initiative of the d'stater muséeën group and extended for eleven years to some 40 museums in the Grand Duchy, the Luxembourg Museum Days offer the chance to visit the exceptional museum heritage of Luxembourg and to enjoy a rich and eclectic cultural offer.
From Clervaux to Rumelange, via Rosport and Beckerich, Luxembourg boasts a great diversity of museums, specialised in fields as varied as history, nature, art, photography, archaeology, technology, the steel industry or even the traditions and customs of yesteryear. The museums each offer a varied cultural programme for the whole family, with guided tours, workshops, concerts and activities for children.
This year's Luxembourg Museum Days are being held as part of International Museum Day, organised every year since 1977 (traditionally on 18 May) by ICOM. The museums which participate in the celebration of this day organise events and activities around this date. The objective is clear: to spread the message that museums are an important means of cultural exchange and enrichment and to encourage mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples. Each year, International Museum Day brings together more and more museums around the world. Last year, more than 37,000 museums participated in the event in nearly 156 countries.
As part of Luxembourg Museum Days, ICOM Luxembourg has also shared teasers from five member museums from across the country on the new website www.luxembourgmuseumdays.lu, which was created for this edition by graphics company Cropmark.
During the Luxembourg Museum Days, various activities will take place in different museums. In view of the limitations on the number of visitors and participants in activities, it is strongly recommended to reserve a place in advance with the participating museums. The full programme and detailed information are available on the above website.
