On Friday 21 November 2025, the Grand Ducal Police provided an update on the progress of their “Wanterzäit 2025” road safety campaign.

Since mid-October and continuing until the end of December, the police have been carrying out traffic checks as part of the road safety campaign, focusing on vehicle lighting, tyres and the general technical condition of vehicles.

During an initial preventive phase, which ran until Wednesday 19 November 2025 and focused on visibility and vehicle lighting, officers generally issued only defect notices for minor lighting faults. Vehicle owners were then given the opportunity to rectify these defects within five days. A total of 355 defect notices relating to vehicle lighting were issued during this preventive phase. However, officers also detected more serious lighting or visibility issues in 155 cases, for which fines had to be issued.

The police reported that in checks focusing on tyres and the general technical condition of vehicles, 209 fines have been issued to date. These included 69 cases involving tyre defects and 59 cases of more serious lighting issues. Officers also noted in 34 cases that the driver’s field of vision was restricted. 20 vehicles had number plates that were illegible, incorrectly attached or otherwise failed to meet required standards. In eight cases, defects related to the general technical condition of the vehicle were identified, and in 18 cases faults were found in the exhaust system.

The police reminded drivers that the enhanced checks under the road safety campaign will continue until the end of December.

The police offered the following advice:

  • See and be seen: in terms of general road safety, drivers must be vigilant and ensure they can clearly see what is happening around them. This includes checking that the lights are working and that the vehicle windows are clear. For pedestrians, runners and cyclists, it is important to be visible to other road users, even from a distance;
  • Vehicle's technical condition: vehicles must be in perfect technical condition. Depending on the weather, tyres must be suitable for the conditions and a clear field of vision must be guaranteed;
  • Safety distance and driving style: keeping an adequate distance from the vehicle in front, opting for a driving style adapted to the weather conditions and complying with speed limits are also essential.
