As schools return after the summer holidays, the Automobile Club Luxembourg (ACL) has announced that the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) is launching a major awareness campaign reminding drivers to remain attentive around school zones.
As a member of the FIA, the ACL will relay this campaign on its social networks. In addition, the Luxembourg police will be mobilised in school zones. The ACL is also giving a series of tips to parents and children on the way to school.
"Children do not have the same cognitive abilities as adults, they cannot perceive the speed of a car realistically and can be easily distracted by their environment," the FIA has emphasised.
This year's campaign warns drivers that anything can happen in school zones and that they must remain vigilant at all times. Named "Drive with caution", this campaign is part of the "Vision Zero" framework, the concept of mutual respect, responsibility and caution in road traffic environments. “The FIA contributes to a culture of safe mobility through our various programmes for children and drivers. This year’s campaign is launched shortly before our annual European Road Safety Competition, which could be described as the Eurovision of road safety for children aged 10 to 12. As a parent and driver, I am proud that we are playing our part in improving road safety around schools,” said Laurianne Krid, Director General of FIA Region I (Europe, Middle East and Africa).
The FIA’s campaign on child safety in school zones has been running in 27 languages in 27 countries across Europe, the Middle East and Africa since 2 September.
In Luxembourg, the campaign will be relayed from 15 September via the Automobile Club du Luxembourg. The campaign is supported by the FIA’s Safe and Sustainable Mobility Grants Programme and will run throughout September.
