The Grand Ducal Police have reported the death of a 45-year-old construction worker following a road accident in Medernach in eastern Luxembourg.

At around 15:00 on Tuesday 12 July 2022, a fatal accident occurred at a roadside construction site on Rue de Larochette in Medernach. While a compact excavator was being unloaded from a container on a lorry, situated on the lane next to the construction site, the container door opened into the other lane. An approaching car driver was unable to stop on time and hit the door, which rebounded and hit a worker, seriously injuring him.

The victim, a 45-year-old male resident of southern Luxembourg, received on site emergency aid before being flown to hospital, where he died of his serious injuries.

The driver of the car that hit the container door was in shock and received treatment from the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps' (CGDIS) psychological service and taken to hospital for further treatment.

The public prosecutor's office ordered an investigation of the scene of the accident and requested an autopsy. An accident report was drawn up and the Inspectorate of Labour and Mines (ITM) was informed.

The affected section of the road was closed for an extended period of time and a detour was set up.
