Luxembourg's Ministry of Mobility and Public Works has announced that the first red light traffic camera in the Grand Duchy, installed in Place de l'Étoile in Luxembourg-Ville, will be operational from Friday 23 July 2021.

Installed in October 2020, the test phase has now come to an end and this first red light camera will now be put into service on Friday as part of the national road safety plan. This crossing is considered particularly dangerous due the regular passage of the tram.

The camera will flash drivers who go over the 50 km / h speed limit as well as those who run a red light. It distinguishes between the different traffic lanes and covers all registered vehicles.

In the event that a vehicle slightly goes over the stop line at a red light to allow the emergency services to pass, only one photo is taken and no offence is generated.

As is the case with other speed cameras, the photos will be erased no later than two weeks after acknowledgment of the fine. Non-usable recorded photos are erased at the latest two months after their registration. In the event of criminal proceedings, the time limit for erasing the photos runs from the day on which the file was definitively closed without further action, where the judicial decision is no longer subject to any appeal or where public action is prescribed.

The installation of similar red light cameras is planned at the intersection of Route d'Esch / Boulevard Dr Charles Marx and at the intersection of Rue de Hollerich / Boulevard Pierre Dupong near Lycée Aline Mayrisch in Luxembourg-Hollerich.
