Luxembourg's Roads Administration has announced the reopening of the N10 between Dasbourg-Pont and Marnach after major redevelopment works.
As of Friday 25 September 2020, two weeks ahead of schedule, the road linking Dasbourg-Pont to Marnach is open to traffic again. This follows the completion of major redevelopment works which amounted to a total cost of €4 million.
The works got off to a bumpy start due to conflicts between the road safety criteria to be met during the redevelopment and the restrictions linked to the status of the area in which the road section in question is located, namely Natura 2000 “Habitats” and “Birds” protection zones. Consequently, an assessment of the effects on flora and fauna habitats and several safety audit studies had to be carried out.
The redevelopment project of the N10, which extends over a section of 4.22 kilometers, was divided into two lots: one for the straightening of the road itself and one for the construction of an engineering structure that minimises the impact on protected species.
During the works, for the first time on a construction site in Luxembourg, on-site cold recycling was applied. This recycling was necessary since the road was polluted with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Emphasis was also placed on safety: the new route is 6 metres wide with extra width in hairpin turns. In addition, two audits relating to the need for the establishment of barriers were carried out.
Safety markings have also been put in place for motorcyclists (as already exists on the N25 and CR342). This additional marking aims to help and guide motorcyclists to better negotiate turns, keep a good distance from the centre line and reduce the risk of collision with another vehicle.
