Road Deaths Down 29% in Luxembourg

Luxembourg's Ministry of Mobility and Public Works has presented the statistics for road accidents in the country in 2019.

Whilst the total number of accidents on Luxembourg's roads was up 4% (988 compared to 947 the year before), the number of deaths dropped from 31 in 2018 to 22 in 2019 (down 29%). The number of seriously injured victims also fell last year to 248 (from 273; down 9%).

The ministry noted that speed remained the dominant cause of road accidents and drink drinking experienced an "alarming" trend in 2019. In addition, dangerous driving, such as overtaking incorrectly or on a solid white line, also had a negative impact on road safety in Luxembourg last year.

The statistics showed that collisions between vehicles were predominant, whilst trees and other fixed obstacles were the cause of many serious road accidents.

25 to 34 year-olds are believed to have been responsible for 38% of fatal and serious accidents and 18 to 24 year-olds were allegedly responsible for 29% of cases in 2019. The ministry noted that it was mainly the older working population which engaged in reckless driving. 

Luxembourg's Minister of Mobility and Public Works, François Bausch, commented: “Although the figures show a general positive trend, we must continue our research into the cause of accidents and constantly adapt our means of combating road insecurity. In this case, I wish to equip our tunnels with section radars as quickly as possible. We must realise that a tunnel, due to its size and reduced visibility, presents an enormous risk of accident in the event of speeding".
