On Tuesday 19 May 2026, Luxembourg’s national railway company, the CFL, announced that from Saturday 23 to Sunday 31 May 2026 (inclusive), several rail lines will be impacted by maintenance and modernisation works carried out to continue ensuring the safety and quality of rail services.
According to the CFL, train services will be suspended on various sections of the Luxembourg – Ettelbruck – Troisvierges – Gouvy and Luxembourg – Kleinbettingen – Arlon lines, as the CFL takes advantage of the Whitsun school holidays to carry out the works, a period when fewer people travel by train and when more buses are available to provide a suitable replacement service.
To ensure continuity of travel, the CFL will provide a significant replacement bus service. Passengers may also use regular RGTR and TICE bus services. The CFL recommends allowing an additional travel time of ten to fifteen minutes due to possible road traffic disruptions.
The CFL noted that trains will continue to operate between Luxembourg and Bettembourg during the Whitsun school holidays. The closure originally planned and announced earlier this year has been cancelled following a reorganisation of the works. The commissioning of the additional line between Luxembourg and Bettembourg, which will provide extra capacity on this section, is scheduled for September 2027.
Luxembourg – Ettelbruck – Troisvierges – Gouvy line:
From Saturday 23 to Sunday 31 May 2026 (inclusive) no trains will operate between Luxembourg and Ettelbruck or between Luxembourg and Diekirch.

Additional works on the Northern line
The CFL reported that the Whitsun holiday period will allow work connected with the removal of level crossing PN13 in Dommeldange to continue, including preparations for moving the future underpass into place.
This 400-tonne structure, measuring 15 m in length, will allow pedestrians, people with reduced mobility and cyclists to safely cross to the other side of the tracks via an underpass beneath the railway line. As a reminder, road traffic has been permanently diverted via Rue Auguste Laval since 7 June 2025.
Maintenance works (track stabilisation, rail replacement and vegetation clearance) will also be carried out to continue ensuring the safety of train operations at various level crossings along the Northern line, including at Schieren and Lintgen.
The suspension of rail traffic will also make it possible to complete the canopy works at Mersch station, as well as track renewal works between the Clausen and Niedergrünewald viaducts.
Luxembourg – Kleinbettingen – Arlon line:
From Saturday 23 to Sunday 31 May 2026 (inclusive) no trains will operate between Luxembourg and Arlon.
Replacement services:
Bus L50 Luxembourg – Kleinbettingen – Arlon

Maintenance works to continue ensuring the safety of rail traffic
The CFL said the school holiday period will also allow several major maintenance operations to be carried out along the entire Luxembourg – Kleinbettingen – Arlon line.
In addition to replacing several hundred wooden sleepers at Bertrange station, the suspension of rail traffic will also allow the drainage system beneath the railway track between Mamer and Capellen to be renewed, as well as the access paths used by CFL staff to move safely alongside the railway tracks.
Vegetation clearance works will also be carried out on various sections of track along the line connecting Arlon to the capital to ensure that plant growth does not interfere with train operations.
The line closure will also allow the Roads and Bridges Administration to continue rehabilitation works on bridge OA1004 crossing over the railway tracks near Capellen.
