On Friday 16 September 2022, Luxembourg's Ministry of Mobility and Public Works and the Syndicate of Luxembourg Towns and Municipalities (Syndicat des villes et communes luxembourgeoises - Syvicol) announed the programme for the 2022 edition of the European Mobility Week.
Since 2005, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg has actively participated in European Mobility Week, which takes place every year from 16 to 22 September.
This international awareness campaign, initiated by the European Commission and in close collaboration with Syvicol, resulting from the “Day without my car”, does not aim to denigrate the car as a means of transport. However and mainly, the use of individual motorised transport should be rethought and adapted to current environmental and societal requirements.
The annual theme of European Mobility Week for 2022 is “Better Connections”. As in previous years, the municipalities participate and encourage activities around this theme.
The choice of this slogan reflects the desire of people to reconnect with each other all over Europe, after months of isolation, restrictions and limitations. Thanks to public transport, people have the means to stay connected when they find themselves in a square in their urban environment. It is essential that all stakeholders and cities cooperate in order to deal with climate change with the aim of significantly reducing emissions linked to urban mobility.
Sixteen municipalities have registered to date, of which four municipalities fulfill the criteria to take part in the awards ceremony at European level. The criteria for this competition are a week of entertainment and information for the inhabitants of the municipality, the inauguration of one or more permanent measures and the closure of one or more main roads in the municipality, preferably during the day of 22 September 2022. These are the municipalities of Colmar-Berg, Ell, Esch-sur-Alzette and Bissen.
A varied programme – the creativity of the municipalities knows no bounds
Two municipalities are organising a car-free day in 2022, including Esch-sur-Alzette on Sunday 18 and Colmar-Berg on Thursday 22 September 2022. The national programme, which is available online via: www.mobiliteitswoch.lu, reflects the initiative and creativity of the municipalities: mobility days, cycle tours, presentations of electric cars and electric bikes, the distribution of croissants and coffees to public transport users and presentations of mobility concepts are part of the programme of the municipalities. A very diversified and playful week awaits the inhabitants of the participating municipalities.
