As of Monday 26 October 2026, Luxembourg's national railway company, CFL, announced that it has joined the international "Hidden Disabilities Sunflower" initiative to support inclusive mobility.

According to CFL, joining the initiative marks another step in its commitment to inclusive mobility and improved assistance for people with invisible disabilities. The company stated that it has been working for several years to improve the accessibility of its services, particularly at railway stations and stops, by adapting these important transport facilities.

As of 26 October 2026, 27 railway stations and stops in Luxembourg had received the "EureWelcome" label from the Directorate-General for Tourism at the Ministry of the Economy. The label recognises facilities accessible to a wide range of users, including people with reduced mobility, older people, families with children and people with disabilities.

Building on its efforts to improve accessibility, CFL has now adopted the sunflower symbol as part of the international "Hidden Disabilities Sunflower" programme. The initiative aims to support passengers with invisible disabilities, including anxiety disorders, mental health conditions and certain chronic illnesses.

The symbol helps CFL staff identify passengers who may need additional assistance, such as guidance through a station, accompaniment to a train or access to a quiet space. Passengers can also contact the CFL Call Centre on tel: 2489-2489 to arrange assistance tailored to their needs. The service is available daily from 06:15 to 21:30.

"Invisible disabilities can, by their very nature, go unnoticed if the person concerned has no way of discreetly indicating a specific need," explained Doris Horvath, Head of CFL's Safety, Security and Environment Department. "Our participation in the Sunflower initiative, which includes training for our customer-facing staff, complements the efforts we have been making for many years to improve the accessibility of our services and railway infrastructure," he added.

"A strategy built around the needs of our customers translates into very concrete measures to ensure that everyone can use our services without difficulties or barriers," further elaborated Marc Wengler, Director General of CFL.

The new initiative uses a green pin or lanyard decorated with sunflowers, which may also be accompanied by a card containing useful information or the contact details of someone who can be reached if necessary. The symbol allows people living with invisible disabilities to discreetly indicate that they may need a little more time, assistance or understanding.

When CFL staff recognise the symbol, they do not need to know the nature of the passenger's invisible disability. Instead, they understand that the person may appreciate additional attention or assistance, whether at a railway station, on board a train or on a CFL bus.

The white version of the lanyard or pin bears the words "Proud to Support Sunflower". It identifies staff members who are familiar with the initiative, support it and are committed to assisting people wearing the sunflower symbol.

Passengers can obtain sunflower lanyards free of charge at the ticket offices of Luxembourg and Belval-Université railway stations, which also serve as dedicated information points. Lanyards are also available at the left-luggage facility at Luxembourg Railway Station, while CFL staff can answer passengers' questions about the initiative.

CFL stressed that wearing the sunflower symbol does not grant special rights or replace the requirement for a valid transport ticket, including the conditions for travelling in first class.
