Luxembourg Minister of Mobility and Public Works François Bausch today presented a cross-border carsharing project, which will cost a total of €60 million.

As part of this project, the hard shoulder on the A6 motorway shall undergo redevelopment. This will foresee the requirement of the modulation of speed (at 90 km/hr) and the use of the hard shoulder during rush hour.

Minister Bausch commented: "At peak times, no fewer than 250,000 seats in cars moving towards the city centre are empty. The goal will be to allow as many people as possible to move but in fewer vehicles, via carsharing."

On the Belgian side, the site for the adaptation of the hard shoulder and the rehabilitation work is under way between Arlon and Sterpenich, for a total distance of 11 kilometres. In Luxembourg, the carpool project will cover a distance of 6.5 kilometres between the Sterpenich border and Kirchberg.

Surveillance systems relating to carsharing are being evaluated and adaptations to the highway code are planned. In addition, nine rest areas will be set up (every 500/1000 metres) and the Steinfort interchange will be renovated.

From the end of May/beginning of June 2019, a test phase in speed regulation will be carried out on the A6. This test phase will probably last until the summer holidays, meaning that the maximum speed allowed during peak hours will be 90 km/h.

The total cost of the project is €60 million. The beginning of the works will take place in 2021 for an estimated duration of two years.
